Lucas Oil to sponsor the Greek for life

Lucas Oil founder Forrest Lucas has announced a unique sponsorship of Chris Karamesines that will last as long as the drag racing legend competes.

Lucas Oil first joined Karamesines, widely known as "the Greek," for seven national events in 2011 to rave reviews from the media and fans.

"The Greek is a legend in our sport," Lucas said. "He's a great ambassador for drag racing and our line of products, and we're happy to partner with him again. I look forward to seeing the Greek's dragster go down the track with our colors on his car for many years to come."

The Chicago native raced in 13 Top Fuel events last year, qualifying for four races. Karamesines earned a first-round victory at Bristol Dragway, his first round-win in NHRA competition in more than 20 years.

Karamesines, 82, has been racing since the 1950s and was recognized as one of NHRA's 50 Greatest Drivers in 2001. "The Greek" has won numerous national events in ADRA, AHRA and IHRA competition.

"I appreciate Forrest helping us out the way he does," Karamesines said. "We'll get to as many Top Fuel races as we can and will do our best for Lucas Oil. What they've done for our sport is tremendous and it's cool to have them on our car. We're very appreciative of their support."

Following a quick test session, Jay Payne is set to officially unveil a brand new 2012 FireIce Chevy Camaro to race in this weekend's NHRA Pro Mod Series race at the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals.

"We've got a brand new car here so we went to test to make sure everything worked and that it would go up and down the track," Payne said. "It was more like a practice session than a real test and everything went well."

With that first bar cleared, Payne said the next hill to climb is finding a little more speed.

"We'd wish is would run just a little bit quicker," Payne said. "We wanted to run about a tenth of a second quicker than we did. That's how this sport is; no matter how quick you go, you always want a little more.

"We tested in Bradenton, and the track was tricky -- people either went low ET or didn't even make it down the track. We shut the car off a little earlier then we might normally because everything was new. We didn't need to scratch-up the car the first day out."

Florida is also the home state of GelTech Solutions, the company that produces FireIce, Payne's longtime sponsor, which makes this weekend especially important to Payne.

"We're practically racing in their back yard," Payne said. "They've been a fantastic partner for me and they support so many worthy causes. It's an honor to represent FireIce."
