Smith's winning entry was titled "ESPN Rises to the Day." The article recounted drag racing team's pressures and frustrations in securing the 10th and final spot at the 2009 Mac Tools U.S. Nationals for the NHRA’s Countdown to 1 playoffs, and how the extended ESPN2 television coverage handled the story.
"Because of the demands of sponsorship along with the innate drive of teams to win, pressures were boiler-high to make the playoffs," Smith said. "The resulting coverage of the various compelling stories of raw human emotion flooded the broadcast with high quality material that kept the viewers involved."
Award-winning journalist, Rob Geiger, founded go2geiger.com with a goal of providing drag racing enthusiasts an unbiased news outlet.
"We're very proud of Phillip," Geiger said. "He's got a column that people really enjoy and it provides something very unique in racing. It's a great example of our work to bring a deeper level of coverage to the sport of drag racing. This honor is well deserved, and not the first time AARWBA has recognized our efforts at go2geiger.com."
Smith writes his Media Matters column after each ESPN2 drag racing broadcast, additionally reviewing books, movies, and videos about racing. A native Minnesotan, Smith is an avid snowshoer, writing for Snowshoe Magazine and the United States Snowshoe Association. He published "Ultra Superior" on ultra-distance trail racing, another of his interests. He also works with the investment firm of Feltl and Company.
Founded in 1955 in Burbank, Calif., AARWBA is the oldest and largest organization in the country devoted to auto racing coverage.
